When you create a new file you will most likely end up with a locked Background layer (fig 1.0). Photoshop treat this
layer as a base layer, so you can stack other elements on top and use this as a default background layer.
You can also change this option and get an empty layer when you create a new file from the start.

02. Go to File > New > Background Contents, Use the dropdown menu and change the option to Transparent
03. Press OK from the previous step and you will end up clean empty background. Notice the layer is unlocked and you can create any content in this existing layer. Since this layer is not locked you can create another layer below this and it will be treated as Layer 2.
By default photoshop has to have a one layer in the layers palette. If you want to delete this layer, you must create an another one.
04. To change the transparent grid size.
Go to Edit > Preferences > Transparency & Gamut and change the Grid size. When you change the size from the dropdown menu you can see the changes immediately without accepting the changes.
If you select None, it will give you white background (still transparency)
05. You can use the Grid Colors to change the color of your grid.
06. You can also assign any flat color to the transparency.
07. Select Custom... from the Grid Colors and it will open a color picker automatically. Select the color you want and copy the HEX value, once you select OK from the color picker another color window opens, paste the hex value and select OK. Since its a grid (with two colors) you need to have the same color for two color wells (fig 6.0).
If the Grid Colors are set to any one of the custom check boxes (fig 4.0), you can still select the color well to change color and it will automatically change to Custom... in the dropbox.
08. You can also change the transparent layer to the default photoshop locked layer.
Select the layer and Go to Layer > New > Background from Layer, this will convert the existing transparent layer to a Background locked layer. It will assign the background color.
