Snapping is one of the easy option to find the center of the object/canvas quickly. The guide from the ruler will help you to snap automatically to the center and the corner of the object/canvas when
you drag and drop it.
Lets see how it works.
01. By default if you drag the guide from the ruler slowly to the middle of the canvas it automatically snaps to the center of the screen. This works in both directions.
Make sure the 'Snap' is checked from the View Menu (View > Snap)
02. If you create a simple selection in the canvas. Dragging the ruler will snap to the center of the selection and not the canvas.
03. Also this works on Lasso selection.
If you extend or Add more selection to the existing selection, dragging the ruler again will automatically snaps to a new center point of the overall selection.
04. The selection does not have to say inside the canvas always. If the selection goes outside the canvas, dragging the guide will find and snaps to the center of the selection.
05. Snapping works everywhere. Just like selection, it also works on any created pixels
06. If you have multiple pixels in a layer, you can turn on the 'Layer Edge' from the View menu to see it better.
View > Show > Layer Edges
07. To explain this better, i have used a green dots and a magnet. The green dot is a snapping location.
(fig 07 - 01 ) If you have grouped different layers and put them as one. Dragging the guide will sees all the individual layer + the canvas dimension.
(fig 07 - 02 ) If the layer is selected, the snapping works on the selected layer and also for the canvas.
(fig 07 - 03 ) If none of the group or layer is selected, the snapping works on the canvas. This is default.
08. Above all, if you make a selection, the snap works only on the current selection and it does not see anything. Notice i have selected the layer.
09. We saw earlier the snapping works on both direction, you can also drag the guide from one direction (horizontal or vertical) and hold the 'alt' to snap to the opposite direction
Snapping on Smart object consider as one object or canvas, and does not see any individual layers inside the smart object.
Snapping also works on Text layer, Shape layer or any opened documents.
